Activity N°1

Forecasting and anticipating weather risks

Ensuring the safety of property and people by anticipating high-stakes meteorological phenomena is Météo-France's priority. Thanks to a high-performance observation system and increasingly refined models, supported by increased computing power, Météo-France is continuously improving the performance of its vigilance and crisis management systems. By mobilising its operational capacities 24 hours a day, the establishment is at the service of everyone - citizens, public authorities and various economic players - in order to warn everyone of meteorological and climatic risks. Météo-France contributes to the management of natural risks (flooding, drought) as well as health and technological risks (monitoring air quality, pollen, forecasting the dispersion of accidental pollution - chemical or nuclear - in the atmosphere or on the sea surface…)

To accomplish its missions, Météo-France must constantly maintain and strengthen its own skills in forecasting, climatology and observation, through research, control and maintenance of key infrastructures. The establishment strives to constantly increase its computing power and develops new technologies for data acquisition and processing so that it can better protect the population and anticipate meteorological and climatic phenomena and their impacts.
