By cooperating with international weather and climate players

Météo-France continues its cooperation with international weather and climate stakeholders. It is thus developing its cooperation with its European counterparts to enrich its observing systems and renewing its investment, at the global level, in the WMO.

A new stage in European cooperation on observation systems

2019 was an important milestone in European cooperation, mainly in the field of observation but also in terms of forecasting and air traffic services, with the launch of a new 5-year phase (2019-2023) of the Eumetnet programmes.

In particular, we can quote:

  • an observation pilot programme whose aim is the pooling of means and resources to carry out missions at optimal cost;
  • an "Aviation" programme helping improve air traffic services by promoting dialogue between its stakeholders and managers;
  • a programme for coordinating the exchange of radar data, which contributes to the production of a European reflectivity image with a definition comparable to the national composite;
  • the ratification of a new agreement that makes it possible to extend the scope of Eumetnet's competence and facilitates the decision-making and action processes.

A new strategic plan for the World Meteorological Organisation

The Congress of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) took place from 3 to 14 June 2019. It adopted the Organisation’s four-year strategic plan for the period 2020-2023 to meet the major challenges of the 21st century. The aim is to integrate the impact of climate change and natural disaster risk reduction in line with the 2030 sustainable development agenda, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sendai framework for risk reduction. This congress also saw the renewal of the Organisation's bodies. France retains its seat on the Executive Board and is represented by the CEO of Météo-France. The CEO of Météo-France is also a member of the political committee.

Météo-France: world centre for space meteorology

Three global centres have been designated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to form a space weather service to deal with the risks associated with solar activity. Météo-France will play a role in the one led by France.
